What happened in the trailer?
This highlights trailer showed a
story of a research experiment, where a professor and a small group of students
are trying to prove that the paranormal is all in the mind.
Which positive, cleaver or
interesting aspects do you think you could include in your own trailer? What
generic features are fulfilled well?
The combination of slow and quick
montage, and collision cutting between quite and loud, creates dramatic tension
in the trailer. I think that the tension in the story line can be seen most
clearly as it cuts to the old family-style video footage. I think that this
reference to the past could be used effectively in our trailer to add context
and story line. Personally, I liked the way that an old-style of filter was
used to show the difference between the ‘real life’ footage and the stuff that is
being recorded throughout the film, I think that this would be a useful
technique to use as it would help the audience differentiate between the
perspectives. This trailer used low key lighting particularly well, adding a
slightly yellowy glow that reinforces the idea that the film will be set back
in time. With the contrapuntal children’s music playing at the beginning making
the viewer feel unnerved.
Which aspects of the trailer did
you think were unsuccessful, and would put off its target audience? How is it
disappointing?
I found this trailer featured a bit
too much speech and conversation, this came in contrast to the title and over
explained what was going on. I think that if a little more was left to be
figured out (rather than featuring this voice-over effect) it could have been
slightly more engaging. This is surprising as it has the educational
undertones, therefore it may be expected to be slightly more intellectually
challenging.
