The mise-en-scene of the costumes foreshadow the events to come. The black shirt connotes the idea that Andre is going to have something bad happen to him, the death of his child and wife. While the white top, connotes the idea that he is pure, this links in with the idea that Kenneth is religious, therefore the pure colour suggests that he is closer to God.
This shot is where two of
the protagonists are discussing religion in the shopping mall toilets. The two
male characters in this shot are positive black males, connoting the defeat of
racism in the world. Andre who had formerly had a criminal background. This attitude
changed to care for his family and unborn. Being with a Russian female, the couple
was in an interracial relationship. By this, the horror genre is challenging
racism and discrimination by illustrating the contextual differences in
comparison to the original Dawn of the Dead (1978). Kenneth’s character is a
police cop who is physically intimidating. While being an imposing man,
Kenneth’s character also contradicts the black male stereotype and exposes him
as a caring person, this is seen in this convocation when he admits that he
wants to find his family, specifically his brother.
