In this scene the audience is
presented with Steven, who is portrayed as the typical male hero, as he
attempts to shoot a zombie with a gun. This phallic symbol represents his
masculine power, this inability to use a gun brings into question his dominance.
This idea is reinforced when Rodger physically pushes Stevens gun out of the
way so that he may finish the task. Suggesting that he not only is more
competent, but that he is also more masculine and holds more power. This
appears to be archetypal of George A Romero’s Auteur style (Andrew Sarris) as
he is turning character stereotypes (Propp) on their heads and therefore
creating more dynamic and interesting characters.
Capitalism is also portrayed in the
mise-en-scene with Steven’s costume of designer clothing portaying the old
class value system. In Rodgers act of moving Steven aside he is also showing
the dismissal of the class system.
